WINTER SNOW AND ICE CONTROL OPERATIONAL CHANGE

In previous years mainly sand/salt mix has been used on roads. New controls were implemented in the 2009/2010 season to ensure product is applied at the right time, in the right place, and in the right amount to protect the environment, motorists, and pedestrians. Except during extremely cold temperatures, salt will be applied to melt snow and ice. Residents are accustomed to seeing sand on the roads, as sand has no chemical properties to melt snow and ice, sand will only be used when road temperatures are below the working temperature for salt. As such residents should not expect to see sand on the roads for every storm.
