River Valley Chamber of Commerse

This is Foster. He’s having a little time-out with his innkeeper, Ann Savoy.

Like Foster, many other dogs - and yes, cats! - have stayed at Ann Savoy’s Country Kennels. And many dogs - and yes cats! - have taken instruction from Ann’s training.

The beautiful part about Ann’s kennels are that they really are out in the country - lovely surroundings and especially the colours this time of year. Great space for exercise and fresh air; Ann certainly has embraced all that is available in this rural countryside to operate her small business. The kennels include 10 large runs and 5 smaller ones and also two cat cages. She employs two others, Andrew Laskey and Jamie Walsh, who help with the day-to-day upkeep and maintenance of the kennels and the guests while she concentrates on the training portion of the business.

Originally from Massachusetts, Ann Savoy started in the insurance industry part time but realized that her love of animals drew her to fulfill a full-time passion.

As a girl, Ann thought of becoming a veterinarian, but after getting a puppy she realized she wanted to turn her attentions specifically to training.

“That little puppy destroyed my apartment,” Ann laughs, “but I really loved him and knew a little bit of obedience would help.”

And now, after 30 years in the business she has been responsible for helping to manage primarily dogs with an attitude problem. She trains group classes in Grand Bay-Westfield and private training in Saint John and surrounding areas as well for behavior problems.

“Sometimes when we take in dogs for accommodation, the owners will ask us to evaluate their pets to see if while they’re staying here, we can maybe help with some of their issues, offer some suggestions.”

Ann continues updating and educating herself on the practises and procedures in the dog trainers world. She is a member of the Canadian Association of Professional Dog Trainers and attends many animal training seminars including several hosted by the vet school at the University of Guelph. Her well known services have also landed her as far out as Mace’s Bay, Hampton and Fredericton.

Ann Savoy’s Country Kennels has been a member with the River Valley Chamber of Commerce for several years.

“I’m a strong believer of the Chamber and it’s very important that we support our local businesses, to make us a stronger community.” Ann supports several community programs including Girls Hockey, the hospital foundation and Scouts.

“This is a community of friends. Some other places people, just move in and move out, but Grand Bay-Westfield is all about family, friends, history and tradition. Just like the Town crest reads, it’s a ‘Community of Friends’.”

This quiet and gentle soul has a kindred spirit with her guests. Animals really can connect with a person and it’s obvious this diminutive trainer commands a strong performance.
