| The Town, being an incorporated
municipality, falls under the direction of the Department of Environment
and Local Government (DOE & LG) and, therefore, is compelled to comply
with Regulation #97-133 under the Air Quality Act.
On November 1, 2002 the DOE &
LG announced changes that are now in effect for Open Fire Burning.
Persons wishing to burn brush in the Town of Grand Bay-Westfield no longer
require a Burning Permit from the DOE & LG in Saint John or from the
Volunteer Fire Department.
Campfire type fires are permitted
all year round. The size of this fire is up to a maximum of 24” in
diameter. These fires are intended to be used for cooking and heating.
They are not intended for clearing brush.
When considering burning brush there are conditions, which must be
complied with:
-
only clear dry wood can be burnt;
-
construction materials of any kind and refuse cannot be burned;
-
there is a set back requirement of 150meters (500ft); this means
that if you are within 500ft of a neighboring dwelling you are not permitted
to burn;
-
you cannot burn when weather conditions will prevent the dispersion
of smoke; the ideal time is a clear sunny day with no winds;
-
you must stay with the fire at all times.
Any persons meeting the conditions associated
with Open Burning are encouraged to come to the Volunteer Fire Department
or Town Office to acquire a copy of the Province of New Brunswick’s Policy
on Open Burning. This will provide you with the information required
to be in compliance with the new policy.
Thank you for your co-operation.
