Congratulations to Mayor Grace Losier on receiving the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.  Mayor Losier was nominated for the Jubilee Medal by the Union of Municipalities of New Brunswick and presented with the Medal at annual Union of Municipalities Conference held in Fredericton September 28 – 30, 2012.

Diamond Jubilee Medal
Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal

A new commemorative medal was created to mark the 2012 celebrations of the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the Throne as Queen of Canada. The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal is a tangible way for Canada to honour Her Majesty for her service to this country. At the same time, it serves to honour significant contributions and achievements by Canadians.

Description of the medal

The obverse depicts a crowned image of the Sovereign, in whose name the medal is bestowed. The reverse marks the sixtieth, or diamond, anniversary of the accession to the Throne of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The anniversary is expressed by the central diamond shape, by the background composed of a pattern of diamonds, and by the two dates. The Royal Cypher consists of the Royal Crown above the letters EIIR (i.e., Elizabeth II Regina, the latter word meaning Queen in Latin). The maple leaves refer to Canada, while the motto VIVAT REGINA means “Long live The Queen!”
The ribbon uses a new arrangement of the blue, red and white colours found in the 1953 Coronation Medal, the 1977 Silver Jubilee Medal, and the 2002 Golden Jubilee Medal.

TOWN OF GRAND BAY-WESTFIELD RECEIVES
NEW BRUNSWICK HORTICULTURAL TRADES ASSOCIATION ANNUAL AWARD

The Town of Grand Bay-Westfield was one of the recipients of a pair of annual awards given at the New Brunswick Horticultural Trades Association's annual meeting held in Fredericton in January 2003.  The award to the Town was in recognition of its tendering of landscape work according to the principles of integrated pest management.

IPM, as it is known in the landscaping industry, aims to systematically reduce the use of chemical herbicides and pesticides by, among other things, studying the land and applying chemicals only when and where they are needed, rather than regularly blanketing entire areas.

This is the next step in sustainable, environmentally friendly turf care, said Jack Wetmore, the provincial group's representative in the industry's national association, the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association.  It's a step forward.

Grand Bay-Westfield, Mr. Wetmore said, is the first community in New Brunswick, and possibly the first in Canada, to tender landscape work according to IPM.

Congratulations

Congratulations to the Greater Saint John Roundtable on Primary Health Care on receiving the Saint John Board of Trade President's Award.

The President's Award gives special recognition to a company, organization individual who has demonstrated a particular excellence or achievement in a certain aspect of their business, having made either an immediate impact on, or a substantial long-term contribution to, the economic progress of our community.

The Roundtable's efforts culminated in October 2002 with the announcement that the first collaborative health care facility will open in the Community Health Centre at St. Joseph's Hospital within a year.  Roundtable membership included Grand Bay-Westfield Mayor Grace Losier and Grand Bay-Westfield Councillor Brenda Murphy.

Another winner for Grand Bay - Westfield !

The New Brunswick Horticultural Trades Association applauds the Town of Grand Bay-Westfield for its positive approach to municipal lawn care practices.

The town recently issued a tender call for maintaining a portion of its properties using Integrated Pest Management (IPM) - the first true tender for IPM in turf in New Brunswick.

'The approach taken in this tender represents a quantum leap forward in pesticide reduction concepts for the province ' a concept that sets the stage for environmentally responsible turf management practices for the future, said Jack Wetmore, the IPM and conservation project coordinator for the association. The tender was awarded to Urban Landscaping of St. John, one of the leading IPM firms in the association.

Integrated Pest Management sets out three key criteria in turf care:

  • cataloguing turf areas by management categories - high, medium and low - based on a concept developed in British Columbia;
  • monitoring to determine the extent of pest problems; and
  • establishing pest threshold levels - weed and insect population benchmarks to be met before the use of pesticides.
In Laval, Que., research found that applying these three criteria can reduce pesticide use by more than 80 per cent while still maintaining the same appearance standards for turf.    Said Mr. Wetmore: “These concepts are very much in the embryonic stage in turf care in our region at the moment. While solid information exists elsewhere, sources are widely dispersed and little has been pulled together for our region. The Grand Bay-Westfield tender has some gaps as a result, but this in no way diminishes the significance of their undertaking.

The New Brunswick Horticultural Trades Association, in cooperation with the Provincial Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Aquaculture and the Department of Environment and Local Government, has been working to compile information for the region in an IPM guideline for turf care. It is also conducting trials to validate 'outside' recommendations. The guideline project has just reached circulation stage for initial drafts. Its content will provide the necessary technical background to close the gap in similar future projects.

''Both community staff and cooperating personnel within the Departments of Environment and Agriculture deserve the strongest possible recognition for Grand Bay - Westfield's landmark initiative," said Mr. Wetmore. "It represents the most tangible demonstration we've seen in the turf field to date to support the environmental stewardship efforts of Environment, Agriculture and industry."

Jack Wetmore, P. Ag., NBHTA IPM and Conservation Project Coordinator.   357-6324 jwetmore@nbnet.nb.ca

  • cataloguing turf areas by management categories - high, medium and low - based on a concept developed in British Columbia;

Communities in Bloom is an exciting national program of environmental awareness and municipal beautification.  The program is designed to involve the whole community in the challenge of improving the visual appeal, civic pride and to increase environmental awareness while competing for Provincial, National and even International Awards.

This year's Communities in Bloom Awards Ceremony was held on September 16, 2000 and hosted by Kingsbrae Gardens and the Garden Café in St. Andrews.  The municipalities of Grand Bay-Westfield, St. Andrews and Rexton were recognized for their hard work and dedication in management planning, maintenance, improvement and innovation of the following:  tidiness efforts, environmental effort, community involvement, heritage sites, urban forestry, landscaped areas, floral arrangements and turf areas.

The Town of Grand Bay-Westfield received a '4 Bloom' rating out of 5 and will be invited to participate Nationally in the 2001 competition.  Grand Bay-Westfield was highly recognized for its community involvement and recycling efforts.
