News Release Commission Imposes Double Fees for Unsorted Waste The Fundy Region Solid Waste Commission passed a motion last night to charge double the current garbage tip fee for any garbage loads containing yard waste. The landfill fee for garbage is $108 per tonne; compost is $28 per tonne. Under the new motion, unsorted waste is defined as any garbage containing yard waste and will be charged $216 per tonne. “Leaf and yard waste should be composted either on your own property or through the green cart compost program,” said Chris Titus chair of the Fundy Region Solid Waste Commission. “Today, the Commission is taking steps to ensure that leaf and yard waste ends up in the right place – in the compost and not in the garbage.” Yard waste includes: Leaves, weeds, twigs and brush. The motion has been put in place to ensure waste haulers do not collect yard waste in the garbage. Fines will come into effect in January 2012. In the meantime, garbage loads will be inspected this fall to monitor compliance with the program. Yard waste will be accepted in the compost when packaged in the following: compost cart, compostable bags, brown paper bags or clear bags. Twigs and brush can be bundled and tied with string. Yard waste in black or opaque plastic bags will be left at the curb. More information about packaging your yard waste visit www.FundyRecycles.com or call 738 1212. “Leaf and yard waste belong in the compost. When packaged properly they will be composted, this program is as simple as switching from a black bag for leaves to a brown paper or clear bag. Then set your yard waste out with your compost on compost day. This new fee for unsorted waste will ensure that leaves in black or coloured bags will be left at the curb,” said Marc MacLeod, general manager of the Fundy Region Solid Waste Commission. The Fundy Region Solid Waste Commission is responsible for solid waste disposal and diversion in the Greater Saint John area, including Crane Mountain Landfill and the recycling and compost programs. The Commission is a non-profit organization governed by representatives of the municipalities and local service districts, and it is funded solely through the various tipping fees at the landfill.
