NOTICE TO GRAND BAY-WESTFIELD RESIDENTS

The Town, being an incorporated municipality, falls under the direction of the Department of Environment (DOE) and, therefore, is compelled to comply with Regulation #97-133 under the Air Quality Act. Persons wishing to burn in the Town of Grand Bay-Westfield no longer require a Burning Permit from the DOE in Saint John or from the Volunteer Fire Department.

Campfire type fires are permitted all year round unless the DNR has imposed a Provincial ban due to weather conditions. These fires are intended to be used for recreational purposes and not intended for clearing brush. It is recommend that a proper backyard fireplace be used and the manufactures instructions be adhered to.

When having a campfire you must:

  • stay with the fire at all times;

  • only clear dry wood can be burned; no leaves, grass, or fir branches;

  • you cannot burn when weather conditions will prevent the dispersion of smoke; the ideal time is a clear sunny day with no winds;

  • keep a safe distance from buildings and woods;

  • construction materials of any kind and household refuse cannot be burned.

When considering burning brush there are conditions, which must be complied with:

  • you must stay with the fire at all times;

  • only clear dry wood can be burned; no leaves, grass, or fir branches;

  • you cannot burn when weather conditions will prevent the dispersion of smoke; the ideal time is a clear sunny day with no winds;

  • construction materials of any kind and household refuse cannot be burned;

  • there is a set back requirement of 150 meters (500ft); this means that if you are within 500 ft. of a neighbouring dwelling you are not permitted to burn;

  • you must have a means of extinguishment, water, shovels, etc.

Open circles of rocks, tire rims or barrels are not recommended for campfires. These listed conditions are for you and your neighbour’s safety in mind.
