Brundage Point River Centre

Sunday, February 7, 2010

1:30pm – 2:30pm

In recognition of Heritage Week, February 8 – 15, 2010 and in cooperation with the Town of Grand Bay-Westfield’s Tourism Committee, a free admission concert of Sea Songs and Shanties by “Before the Mast” will be held on Sunday, February 7, 2010 at the Brundage Point River Centre, 4 Ferry Road, Grand Bay-Westfield from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm. “Before the Mast” sings "a cappella" and is dedicated to preserving and promoting songs of the sea. Many of these, such as short or long haul shanties, were working songs, designed to help sailors perform repetitive and arduous tasks as they sailed around the world. “Before the Mast’s” repertoire also includes songs by modern composers and some better known shanties are sung for the audience to sing along.  In keeping with the nautical theme, a small treat of salt water taffy will be provided by the Town and a copy of The Sea Captain’s Wife, a novel by Beth Powning will be drawn as a door prize. Donations accepted for area food bank. “Before the Mast”: www.beforethemastseashanties.com
